Nothing makes you feel better when you are missing your baby, than to SHOP for her!! All I can say is she better be home by the time she is 22 pounds! I have a closet full of clothes that she needs to wear (soon). I also bought a car seat saver to protect my seat. Which leads me to my real reason for posting...
Those of you that brought home babies that were 8-12 months old: Did you put them in an infant seat or a regular care seat? I am debating. Jake was a big boy and I remember he got out of his infant seat well before he was a year old. However, Bella only weighs 15 pounds and I am hoping she will not weigh much more when we get her home. She seems to be gaining a pound a month. Since she has never been in a car seat or restrained, for that matter, I was wondering if the infant seat would give her more security. So, if you would leave me your suggestions and opinions on this matter, I would greatly appreciate them. :)

My opinion?? Infant seat! That's definitely what JP will be in for a little while for a couple of reasons--- 1) Guatemalan children are not as long as American babies. So, even if they weigh 22lbs., they will not necessarily have outgrown the infant status. 2)I work w/ several physical therapists who are installing my seat for me--they suggested the infant seat for protective purposes. So, I hope that helps. Now, to those moms who are installing the regular seat--I AM NOT SAYING THAT YOU ARE WRONG!! This is ONLY my opinion. JP is VERY TINY and it's the decision I've made for him. Every child is different!
We are also trusting we will have Eloisa home before she is a year old and I bought an infant seat for her as well because she is so tiny. I guess it's a little bit because I want to keep her a baby for longer but mostly for safety.
Amanda,
We bought Madeline a Britax Marathon. She is a peanut too.. her last medical (back in February, she was 13lbs) so I am estimating her to be almost 16lbs now at almost 9 months old..
HTH
The Britax Marathon car seats are wonderful, even for a very small baby. Mine seemed more comfortable in it.
Our daughter was 13 pounds when we brought her home (at 6 months), so we used the infant seat, but by 9 months she had outgrown it length wise (26 inches) although she still only weighted 15 lbs. Luckily we just borrowed our infant seat, so it wasn't a big deal to put her into her convertible car seat (and with her current weight, I think she'll be rear facing til she's 2!).
I am wondering the exact same thing! I have bought a Britax Decathalon, but was also wondering about the infant seat thing. Graco makes one that goes up to 30 pounds.
I will be following this post carefully!
I got the convertible Eddie Bauer. I don't want to be lugging my 18 pound girl around in that carrier. LOL. Mine says from 5-80 pounds, so we're sticking with that. I don't want to buy 2 when I know she will outgrow it in a month or two!
I don't have any advice to give--in fact, I am so glad you asked the question. Car seats are something I have been wondering about too. I'll be watching what your readers have to say!
When Gia came home I put her in her Graco infant seat and she HATED it. I thought that she just needed to get used to being in a carseat. After about one month we put her into her Britax Decathelon and never heard another peep from her again. She loves that seat and never cries in it. We just bought one for Massimo, too.
Hey Amanda,
I used an infant seat for Carter when he came home at 12 months old. He was 19 pounds and wore 6 month size clothes. But he was sitting up well and starting to try to crawl and that kind of thing so he hated it. Within a month we changed him over to a reg. car seat and rear faced him. He was happier with that.
I have no idea what I am doing for Evan who is also about 19 pounds and was 26 inches when I was there in March, tiny. But he is crawling well and pulling up and will be walking soon if he isn't already. Maybe I will get an infant seat and keep the receipt if he hates it. hmmmm...
Hi Amanda! Originally, we were planning to use a Graco infant carseat when we brought our daughter Savannah home because we were expecting her home at around 6 months of age. But now, she is a little over 11 months old and we are finally getting to bring her home in 2 weeks. We went out and bought a Britax Marathon carseat yesterday, which is what we use with our 3 year old Mackenzie. We have been very happy with the Marathon and know that it will be great for Savannah too! They go from 5 pounds to 65 pounds and are easily adjustable depending on the size of your baby. Good luck!
Keely (Savannah's mommy)
Amelia, the cranky carseat princesa, as you know came home at 11 months (as you love to remind me, on the day she turned 11 months). She was only 18 lbs. when we brought her home but they had *told* us 20 lbs. before we got down there. So we had installed the Britax Marathon front facing - I can tell you that coming home from the airport (I actually just typed hospital first - I am so WEIRD!) I thought we had made a mistake b/c she looked so tiny. But as you also know she gained 3 lbs. her first month home with us - and Bella might do the same. So I think it was the right decision for Amelia to go FF in a big girl seat.
I, like Lou, have no desire to cart Hudson around in an infant seat...seeing as he's already 19 lbs! But I would likely get one if he was tiny! Hard to say... :) It is fun to buy for our babies...I'm trying to wait until we are OUT of PGN to get him any more clothes! Praying for you!!
We actually bought a great car seat at Babies R Us that can be used for 5-80 pounds. It converts into a booster seat for later. It was a little pricey, but you'll only have to buy this one seat. It begins as rear facing and then front facing when it is time. Just an idea! :)
So glad you posted this question! We are still waiting for our little man, but he is a chunk! :) Looks like several people are happy with the Britax Decathelon... Think I will look into that!
